MAY 10 - 16 IS COVERING THE UNINSURED WEEK

Over 49,000 people in St. Joseph County are uninsured. Nationwide, this is a growing problem. Those who are uninsured are less likely to receive preventative screenings, are sicker when diagnosed, received fewer therapeutic services and have poorer outcomes than the insured. And the high number of the uninsured in this country affects everyone. In 2001, the total cost of care received by the uninsured in the U.S. wsa $98.9 billion: uncompensated care accounted for $35 billion while almost $30 billion was financed by the governement. Un-reimbursed costs are eventurally passed on to health care consumers in higher health care costs and higher health insurance premiums.

Organizations across St. Joseph County are working to assist the uninsured. Programs such as HCI's HCAP project are helping them learn to manage health issues and utilize screenings and treatments that will limit the number of trips to the emergency room. Working together HCI and it's partners are building the healthiest community in America!

For more information about Cover the Uninsured Week or about the HCAP program, please contact Marchell Wesaw at 239-8585, ext. 272 or e-mail mwesaw@hcisjc.org.
